It is said that for one to be able to love - One first has to love oneself.
Many people suffer from low self-esteem because they don’t love themselves.
Low self-esteem stems from a myriad of issues; ranging from a lack of love from others, to a bad childhood, to constantly being ridiculed by others. Most of all, low self-esteem feeds on a lack of self-love.
People with low self-esteem are usually less confident, and can sometimes feel the need to put other people down to make themselves feel better. Of course, this is never too healthy for a relationship. Hence the saying to love another, one has to first love oneself.
When the mind is set to believe that it has no worth; it will function like it has no worth. Call it Placebo or whatever, a child conditioned enough times verbally that he is stupid will probably come to believe he isn’t too bright. If you are a victim of something similar, do not lose heart. Much like self-esteem can be torn down; it can be rebuilt.
Building self-esteem isn’t as hard as most people perceive it to be. In fact, all it takes is a little more positivity in your everyday life, and you will start to see magical changes in places you never dreamed of.
Ask yourself everyday, “What do I like about myself?” It could be anything; your love for dogs, the way you make good pasta, anything at all. When you answer these questions and feel better about yourself, your self-esteem starts to build. Replace your negative thoughts with more positive ones.

Having a good self-esteem will make you a happier person. It will improve your relationship not only with others, but with yourself. Gradually, you will find yourself a more confident person, more willing to take on what life has to offer. Like how Whitney Houston sang it, “learning to love yourself, is the greatest love of all”. If you haven’t started, now’s a good time to develop a relationship; with yourself. |
